What we mean by cookies

A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser. We also use browser storage for the same purposes — remembering your choices, and keeping you signed in — and we treat both the same way here.

Nothing outside the strictly necessary category is set, loaded or requested until you have made a choice. Rejecting is one click, in the same place and the same size as accepting.

Strictly necessary

Keeps you signed in and remembers your theme. Without these the app cannot hold a session, so there is nothing to switch off.

Analytics

Anonymous counts of which screens get used, so we know what to fix. Nothing loads until you say yes, and saying no is the default.

Permissions that are not cookies

The preference centre also holds the choices that are not about storage at all — location, push notifications and marketing email. They are in the same place because that is where you would look for them:

• Marketing email — Occasional email about new features. Never more than monthly, and every one unsubscribes in a click.
• Location while walking — Reads your position while an adventure is recording, so the route can be drawn.
• Sharing where you are — Lets nearby members see a distance band — never a pin. Withdrawing this deletes the position we hold immediately.
• Push notifications — Alerts on your device. Withdrawing this deactivates the device tokens straight away.
• Background location — Not used today. Listed so the switch exists before the feature does.

Changing your mind

Open “Cookie preferences” in the footer at any time. Withdrawing takes effect immediately: turning off location sharing deletes the position we hold, and turning off push deactivates the tokens on your devices in the same request.
